For Sage Kimzey, everything similar is different. Everything old is new. Kimzey, a seven-time PRCA world champion bull rider, missed out on another title last season after undergoing lengthy surgery on his left shoulder over the summer.
Kimzey continued to gain traction in his return to competition this season, with a win over the San Angelo Extreme Bulls on Sunday in Texas. Kimzey entered the vault first with a favorable draw on his first ride then ziplocked the crown with poise on an ornery animal with a history of dumping cowboys.
The 28-year-old posted 177 points on two heads, 87.5 in Stockyards Pro Rodeo's Crash Kart and 89.5 in Harper & Morgan Rodeo Company's Pickup Man to best Tyler Taylor's 165.5. It represented Kimzeyy's PRCA-record 11th career Division 1 Extreme Bulls victory and first since his victory last May in Uvalde, Texas.
"San Angelo is always great. It's an old-school coliseum with the fans above you. I love coming here," said Kimzeyy, who pocketed $11,614 for his work. "It was really loud out there today."
Kimzey gave reason to go throat to roar from the crowd. Crash Cart provides an ideal opportunity to get started quickly.
"I was really excited to get Crash Cart in the long round. He's a borderline short-round bull. I knew he would give me a great opportunity to get a high choice in the short round. I had to capitalize," Kimzey said. "He walked into my hands. He's a buck. And like a lot of guys, he was a buck for me."
KimJ still had to finish. And the next bull brought uncertainty. The pickup man is no one's idea of a simple sign. Kimzey was never into stocks, but asked around and developed a game plan that required patience and balance.
"He puts a lot of top guys on the ground. He's a bull that will take you in every direction of the rotation. It's best to be in the middle. He shook me loose around the corner and left the chute," Kimzey said. "But I managed to finish strong."
For Kimzeyy, the win shifted his season into high gear. He has his sights set on another world title, and it's starting to look more realistic.
"I think I'm really close," Kimzey said. "It takes repetition to get back to the top of your game. And it's starting to get there."
